Internet Connectivity Issue in Pakistan

The Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP) reports a 30-40% drop in internet speeds recently, affecting businesses and individuals reliant on stable connectivity reported by Tribune Express. Due to intermittent service, people are unable to access their own websites or check their emails, leaving them disconnected and frustrated. Sectors like call centers, e-commerce, and online businesses are hit hard, with some considering moving operations to countries with more reliable internet. The slowdown is expected to continue until October 2024, when repairs to the SMW-4 submarine cable are anticipated to be finished, according to the PTA.

Issues with Sending Emails?
If you are unable to send emails using Outlook or Thunderbird:

  • Sometimes, email clients like Outlook and Thunderbird may encounter connectivity issues when sending emails. If you’re currently using port 25, consider switching to alternative ports: 26 (None), 587 (STARTTLS), or 465 (SSL/TLS). If none of these ports work, we recommend using webmail until the internet port blocking issue is resolved.
  • If webmail isn’t working, try using a VPN or proxy to access your emails.
  • If webmail still doesn’t work, consider restarting your internet router or switching to a different internet connection and try again.

Trouble Accessing Websites?

  • If a website is not opening try using a proxy to bypass local network issues or regional restrictions
  • You may also try configuring your network setting to Google DNS records
  • If the website still doesn’t load, ask a relative or friend abroad to check if they can access it to make sure its working globally

Uneven Access Across the Same Internet/Networks?
Many users have reported inconsistent access on the same internet or network. While some can check their emails without issues, others cannot connect at all. This could be due to several reasons.

ISP Throttling:
Internet Service Providers (ISPs) might throttle or limit speeds for certain activities or users, causing varying levels of access.

Firewall or Security Settings:
Network security settings or firewalls may block certain users or devices from accessing specific services like email, causing uneven access.

DNS Issues:
Problems with the Domain Name System (DNS) can prevent certain users from connecting to email servers, while others using different DNS settings might not be affected.

Different Devices Having the Same Internet Connectivity

  • Due to the intermittent internet service in Pakistan, all devices may face issues simultaneously, like slow speeds or connection drops.
  • Even with the same connection, different devices might experience varying performance due to device settings, hardware differences, or software configurations.
